Evertrot
Evertrot is a small, fictional start-up focused on engaging young travelers through its online presence. Unlike traditional travel agencies like Sunweb or Corendon, Evertrot offers a unique approach. It connects supply and demand while embracing the flexible, free-spirited work style of its target audience. For one of my courses I researched how I could translate this free-spririted working style into a fitting digital product for Evertrot.

Before diving into the research process, we outlined two key scenarios to guide our research, and to use as foundation for the design of our product. These are the following:
A traveler wants to plan a trip to a destination outside of Europe.

A traveler is looking for assistance in creating the best possible itinerary.

With these scenarios in place, we conducted interviews to learn about people’s experiences with online travel planning. We asked them to map out their journey: How do they approach trip planning? What tools do they use? In what context do they plan their travels? This research provided us with the much needed insights and data as a good foundation for our research.

After gathering the data, we began the process of affinity mapping to help us better understand and organize the themes within our research. This allowed us to group the data into relevant categories, such as pain points, key functionalities, budget concerns, preferred tools, social interactions, travel criteria, and the devices users rely on during their planning process. By sorting the information in this way, we were able to uncover patterns within the current user experience very easily.
Having categorized the data, we took a closer look at the most obvious frustrations and needs that users expressed throughout the interview. This made sure we were actually solving the right problem, and kept us on track for the next stage: setting up our most important design principles.

Focusing on our users' needs and frustrations, we brainstormed design principles that would ensure a smooth travel experience with Evertrot. We came to the conclusion that the product have to be one that facilitated cooperation, but would also be stress-free experience where you as a traveler have the most priority. With these goals in mind, we defined the following design principles:

Guided by these principles, we concluded that our product should take the form an of app, allowing users to easily plan and book trips wtih friends. But without all the stressful additions found in today’s travel products. We also started mapping out what this app would look like from an information architectural perspective.

All that research quickly turned into a plethora of wireframes, with screens across the whole user flow. In an attempt to create a complete prototype we also designed lesser important screens such as onboarding and the login screens, which later turned out to be a costly mistake as we were running behind on time. But hey, you live and you learn. Below are a few of the screens we designed.

Subsequently, we tested our prototype with a multitude of users, and as expected, we found a ton of gaps and usability problems in our app. For example, while the app initially required users to go through the whole ticket ordering process immediately, this seems way too exhausting for users who only wanted to set up their travel plan and weren’t prepared for something like this.

Having just a few more days before hitting the deadline, we started working a final visual design. As we wanted to excite users to start traveling, we chose bright colors and an accessible rounded style. Combined with a legible typeface, we came up with a clean visual design.

This design was originally created in January of last year, and over the past two years, I’ve gained a lot new design experience. Recently, I revisited this project to address some of the flaws I identified in the original design. In addition to refining it, I gave the design a fresh coat of paint to better reflect my current design style.
